the 100km.

4AM SATURDAY 14 DECEMBER 2024 | THE TRAILS OF WHAKATU-NELSON

Why the 100km?

Do you think you can run from Nelson to Takaka?
Dunedin to Oamaru?
Auckland to Hamilton?

Then the 100km is for you!
Get ready to redefine what it means to truly experience the essence of trail running nirvana and push the boundaries of your mind, body, and spirit.

The course.

The adventure begins with a gradual ascent from Waahi Taakaro Golf Course to Sharland Hill from the serene Maitai Valley, serving as a gentle warm-up for what lies ahead. A descent to Brook Street leads to the challenging climb up New Zealand's inaugural railway to Third House Hut.

Traversing along the Brook Waimarama Sanctuary fence-line to Jenkins Hill, runners emerge from the dense forest to breathtaking vistas of the Barnicoat Range. A forested descent towards the Roding River offers a moment of reprieve before the trail veers into the wilderness, following the rugged Hackett Track to Hackett Hut.

Entering the renowned Te Araroa Walkway, participants tackle formidable climbs to Browning Hut, Totara Saddle, and Rocks Hut, immersing themselves in the untouched splendour of Mount Richmond Forest Park.

Bid farewell to the Te Araroa trail at Rocks Hut, as a challenging ascent to Dun Saddle awaits, culminating in a hand-on- knees rock scramble to conquer the summit.

From Dun Mountain, there’s a climb over Little Twin, then relish in the rewarding descent towards Dew Lakes, Rush Pools, and the Maitai Dam. Transitioning into the Hira Forest, runners embark on a skyline traverse through the towering pine plantation before descending back into the Maitai Valley.

Ascending once more to Tantragee Saddle, participants pass through this natural gateway before ascending to the Grampians ridge-line. The final descent awaits as runners navigate a heart-pounding descent to Church Hill. Formerly known as Pikimai, a revered Maori Pa, this sacred site has been transformed into a towering cathedral. Conquer the final hurdle of 85 stone steps with determination, for this is not merely a race—it is a testament to the human spirit.

QUALIFYING STANDARDS

We do not have any mandatory qualification standards. However The Spectacle 100km race is extremely long and challenging and enters mountainous environments.

To enter you must have adequate fitness, mountain running or hiking experience to complete the course in the available time.  This can be completion of previous mountain running or experience in tramping, adventure racing, or sub 5 hour marathons with a combination of trail running experience.

With a 32 hour cutoff for the 100km, the race has been designed to enable experienced runners to step up to these massive distances for the first time. If you are unsure if you are able to make the cutoffs please feel free to reach out for a chat with our team at info@thespectacle.co.nz.

AID STATIONS

Aid stations will be available on the course. Exact locations TBC. Only certain aid stations will be able to be reached by vehicle for personal gear drop off.

MANDATORY GEAR

The mandatory gear list contains the minimum gear recommended to keep our athletes safe during The Spectacle and in Nelson’s unpredictable weather systems, especially while summiting various peaks within the Richmond Ranges. If you would normally take additional gear on a run of this duration and over this terrain, please take it.

The course passes through remote sections of trail, where protection from the elements and medical/support services could be some time/distance from athletes needing assistance. It is therefore imperative that the mandatory gear is carried at all times.

Mandatory gear will be spot-checked before the race and those without the required gear will be unable to compete. Please thoroughly read the mandatory gear list for your race.

MANDATORY GEAR LIST:
